About V17

Solid Edge enhances 2D/3D hybrid design by extending the use of virtual components with the ability to automatically create 2D representations from existing 3D components. With this enhancement, V17 makes using 2D layouts even more productive. This proves to be particularly useful for large machinery designs.

The introduction of direct editing, the first of its kind for leading mainstream modeling systems allows editing of complex parametric models without needing to know the creation methodology. It also proves to be especially useful in working with imported models.

Support for massive assemblies contains one of the most technically fascinating ways we have seen to automatically simplify assemblies. Using patent pending algorithms, Solid Edge determines and eliminates interior and small parts from large assemblies, thus producing a very lightweight assembly as an alternate representation of the precise assembly. At any time, the associated precise form of the assembly can be used instead of the simplified version, if desired.

The simplified assembly allows drawings of  these large assemblies to be created quickly and accurately. Without the interior detail, the work of cleaning up hidden lines in drawings is greatly simplified.

Solid Edge V17 improves further on its ability to support rapid design reviews by adding XpresReview. XpresReview uses PCF (packaged collaboration files) generated by Solid Edge to create design packets of information for e-mail distribution while retaining links to the original designs.

Perhaps the most fascinating functional enhancements for Solid edge V17 directly impacts its already enviable ease of use. Apprentice Mode and Command Assistant aim to make the system easier to use by optionally guiding the user through the series of actions required to product usable CAD models. In addition, a Feature Error Assistant, when detecting a geometry violation that prevents the system from completing the calculation of a function, tells the user exactly what failed and makes suggestions for the user to take corrective actions!
